Lead to Read is a Kansas City non-profit dedicated to improving the basic literacy skills of children in our urban core. Why? Because fewer than half of Kansas City, Missouri third graders are reading on grade level. In many urban core schools, it’s fewer than 25 percent. Our mission is to support the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success by mobilizing community volunteers to read with students in elementary schools. Launched in 2011, we connect 1,100 elementary students with adult Reading Mentors in more than 50 classrooms across the metro each week.
